Tim Axtman Creates Handcrafted, One-Of-a-Kind Pottery

Tim graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1970 with a B.A. in Art. Tim has been involved in artistic endeavors most of his life. Tim has tried almost every medium including oils, watercolors, printmaking, furniture designing and building and most recently, pottery. Much of Tim's inspiration comes from the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Art Deco period. Tim takes great care in the gracefulness of the lines, simplicity of his pieces and their finishes. Tim Axtman is a member of the EastBank Gallery & Studio in Sioux Falls, SD. Tim´s work is currently displayed at The Piper Gallery and the Horse Barn Gallery in Sioux Falls; the Coffee Shop Cafe and Gallery in Vermillion, SD.; the Adam Whitney Gallery in Omaha, Ne.; the Louisville Art Gallery in Louisville, Ne.; and Art Resources in the Galleria in Edina, Mn.

Many of Tim´s art pieces are raku fired. The word raku means "happiness through chance". This is a 16th century Japanese method of firing pottery. The room temperature glazed pottery is placed in the raku kiln and brought up to 1800 degrees. It is then taken from the kiln while glowing orange and placed in a bed of combustable materials such as shredded paper or sawdust. Next a metal container is placed over the pottery cutting off the oxygen. The combination of extreme temperature variations and the smoke from the combustion creates a variety of color flashes depending on the glazes used. The effect on each piece and the final outcome of the process is always a surprise. With Raku you can never tell exactly how each individual piece will turn out. This is why Raku potters are so intrigued by this firing technique.
